Aspirations of Summer, Post-Impressionistic Landscapes
Exhibition of Paintings by Christopher Wikman
Friday, March 18 – April 15, 2011
PASiG DESiGNS Art Gallery presents an exhibition of post-impressionistic landscape paintings by artist Christopher Wikman. This exhibition centres around scenes from the Riding Mountain area. There will be an “After Work” showing from 4:30pm – 6:00pm and an evening reception from 7:30pm – 9:30pm on Friday, March 18, 2011. The artist will be in attendance as well as curator and gallery owner Cameron Heming.
Christopher Wikman Biography:
Chris Wikman was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1973. Primarily working in acrylics and oils Chris’s subject matter over the years has ranged from portraiture, suburbia, to landscapes of the prairies.
His influences are deeply rooted in Matisse, The Fauvists, Van Gogh, The Group of Seven, and Canadian contemporaries such a Greg Hardy, R.F.M. McInnis, and Ted Godwin of the Regina Five.
Chris has exhibited his work in over twenty group shows, several solo shows, and won three Saskatchewan adjudications. His work can be found in private collections throughout the prairies, British Columbia with collectors as far as Africa, Cayman Islands, and the Dominican Republic, including corporate collections. He is now currently living in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, working full time in his studio preparing for upcoming solo shows.
Christopher Wikman Artist Statement:
Often using playful brushstrokes and grabbing colours my emphasis as a painter is not just to capture the physical nature of a place but the feeling as well. Whether trying to depict the immense prairie skies, quiet marshes, or vast open spaces I want my work to look quick, spontaneous, fleeting, as if working against the clock. My use of bold colours, and strong lines, is to help give the viewer an element of surprise rather than something they have seen a thousand times before. Painting for me is about exploring those fragmented moments of the human condition and how they become daily lenses on how we see and interact with the world but that we rarely grace with definition.
PASiG DESiGNS Gallery will be open Monday – Friday for the duration of the exhibition. Daily hours will be posted online at pasigdesigns.com/gallery and at 1009 Princess Avenue.
